My degree, my country and my world
I am a university student. Not just a university student but also a sort of funded student from the taxes you and I pay each and every day thanks to free education as they say. What I study as a university student are three subjects called Maths, Physics and Computer Science. Generally I really do not know when or where I'd have to use "cauchy riemann equations" or quantum mechanics in my whole life but I do know what I can do with a computer, so I opt to go with it to continue my degree. Bachelor in Computer Science sounds sweet to my ears but not a rest to my eyes which will be staring at computer screens for the rest of my life. I will see code, I will breathe code, I will code code and I'd probably eat and do the rest in code too. That's the life I will have. Not much is taught by lectures in this filed. The ones who seek it must seek it on their own in the vast network of computers know as the internet without being taken away by its many temptations to ruin your life. Meaning, it's not easy.
So when I complete my four year degree hypothetically, according to the system I should be rewarded with a job entitled to a nice salary. Wrong. I have to find one with a barely visible salary also known as internships, where I have to work more than a software engineer usually does for a very low price with a chance of having myself fired at any given moment. Sounds pretty challenging doesn't it ? Next comes the stress. Physical and mental dehydration.
As said before I am funded by taxes. So I am a product of u and I or in other words this country. Therefore I have a duty. Something awaits to be done by me. That would be to raise the economy rate of the IT industry of Sri Lanka. The five billion dollar target of 2022. It's going to take lots of coding to do that. But is that all i could do with this degree ? A desk job to help build a billion dollar industry ? My thought is I can do more than that. The country is in a need of technological advances, global recognition, computer literacy and etc. What if I could build a company that full fills the need of the technological advancements we need. I have a degree that lives with tech together with some friends it won't be a miracle. Can't I use my knowledge and expertise to teach the children and the elderly to use the computer easily and to do it right. It is not just the degree but the heart and soul to serve your country. Won't they be aspired and continue to help and build a better country ? They will. A chain reaction which will go on and on while surpassing the billion dollar targets.
The world will see this, they will learn. Learn that this can be done. Not only in this field but in other fields to. The internet as it is today will no longer be the global village but a network of us, a network of humans will make it. The lost humanity will be found. together my world will be strong. It will seek new innovations, technologies, arts and many more. If one could do his or her service to a country in the best he or she could do the impact is immense. Enough to change a country a world. A degree is just an extra credit to make the journey easy. It is pure heart and soul what is needed.
