My degree, my country and my world
Beginning from the childhood every person have a dream in their life. Like all, I had a dream to be a doctor and to give my maximum service to the community. But unfortunately I missed that opportunity and selected Health promotion as my degree in the University. But now I think from this degree can do many things to the whole world rather than being a doctor. So' I'm very happy about that. This innovative degree is designed to equip us with theoretical skills required for a career in health promotion. Rajarata University is the only place that having this degree program in the South Eastern Asia.
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health. So, according to that people have the ability to empower in the society. Health promotion approach is community based and it is relevant to any community. When there is any health problem people can find what are the determinants or factors effecting for that problem. So, using different types of interventions and activities can address the factors. Community has the ability to monitor and evaluate all the things that they are doing. So, people not controlling by external party in any time. In Sri Lankan communities this health promotion approach is more relevant
Within three year period of the degree program we can cover mainly some issues. They are underweight among people, non communicable diseases, high consumption of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs, poor relationships, poor ECCD practices and so on. Apart from that we have the ability to work with many types of settings in the Sri Lanka. Some of them are school, rural and urban villages, AG office, army camps, hospitals etc. So, I think there is a good place in the world for health promotion and through this holistic approach can increase the happiness and improve the health in the whole world.
